Pugs
Bryan702 asked:

My pug just turned two and I’ve had her ever since she was eight weeks old. She is very sweet and LOVES to give kisses! She is for the most part a very well behaved puggy. But one thing always bothered me…..Everytime I go to pet her, she always lowers her head. Now I’ve never hit her or even been the least bit hostile twords her, so it makes me wonder if it’s something I’m doing or if it’s just a dog thing?

Lots of dogs do that. Try approaching from below & start petting her neck & chin and work around to the top.

I think lowering the head means submission in the dog world.

Can u imagine being a little pug and a huge, scary, outstretch hand is coming towards you???? Thats why she lowers her head. Try patting her on the chest instead. Most dogs react in this manner to people patting their head as it is intimidating. Children should always be taught to pat a dog on the chest, as they can fear bite in this situation.

That seems normal enough. I’ve had 2 dogs, each a different breed (none of them pugs) and they both did that too.

I think that maybe it’s just a natural reaction, kind of like when you blink when something gets near your eyes.

Mine does that as well! I think it has something to do with their brow bones not as pronounced as other dogs. I think that combo with the eyes just makes them very aware and sensitive to anything around their heads. Once you start petting he loves it. Mine HATES it when you touch above his nose also I attribute that to his sinuses.
